What is adhd?

What is ADHD? As educators, we have encountered many students with ADHD over the years. Have we really taken a deep dive into what this means for these students on a day-to-day basis in the classroom? Use the resources below to expand your understanding of ADHD, which in turn will help you better serve your students.

For students with ADHD, executive function typically lags 3-5 years (30%) behind peers – reframe for where the student is developmentally, not chronologically.

  • ADHD Brains are wired for fun/interest/play/novelty/urgency.

  • Emotional Regulation is underdeveloped.

    • Looks Like: explosive behavior followed by regret/shame; extreme emotional responses; immature emotional responses; may automatically move into Fight/Flight/Freeze/Fib.

    • What is going on: overwhelmed; overstimulation; stressed cognitively; unable to handle intensity of emotion; unable to transition easily; impulsive reactivity.

    • What can help: planning ahead; creating safe choices; enabling student to practice self-regulation or to find ways to calm or recharge; social coaching; modeling.
